The Future of Work: Embracing Human Skills in the Age of AI and Automation

16 May 2025

In 2019, I presented a session to University of Waterloo alumni on navigating the current employment workspace. The conversation centred around the speed of change over the last 100 years, and we all agreed that the workspace was changing faster now than ever before. A year later, COVID only sped up the rate of change and how work is done today. Artificial intelligence (AI) and automation have transformed our work in today's rapidly evolving job market. AI can now write code, robots can automate workflows, and machines excel at repetitive tasks. This technological shift is reshaping industries and redefining job roles. So, what does this mean for job seekers as they seek to navigate the employment workspace?

The Rise of AI and Automation

AI's capabilities have expanded significantly. For instance, AI-powered tools can generate code snippets, refactor code, and assist in bug detection and resolution, enhancing productivity in software development. Beyond coding, robots and AI systems are automating entire workflows, from manufacturing processes to administrative tasks. Machines are particularly adept at handling repetitive and data-intensive tasks, often outperforming humans in speed and accuracy.

While these advancements increase efficiency, they also raise concerns about job displacement. However, studies suggest that AI is not leading to widespread job losses but may limit pay growth in certain sectors.

The Human Edge: Creativity, Curiosity, and Critical Thinking

Despite AI's growing capabilities, there are uniquely human skills that machines cannot replicate.

  • Curiosity: The innate human desire to explore, ask questions, and seek understanding fuels learning and discovery. Curiosity leads to breakthroughs and advancements that AI cannot initiate independently.

  • Creativity: AI can analyze data and generate content based on existing patterns, but it cannot think creatively and innovate beyond its programming. Human creativity drives original ideas, artistic expression, and novel problem-solving approaches.

  • Critical Thinking: Humans can assess situations, consider multiple perspectives, and make informed decisions in complex and ambiguous scenarios. Critical thinking enables us to navigate ethical dilemmas and adapt to unforeseen challenges.

Preparing for the Future

As AI and automation continue to evolve, job seekers can take proactive steps to remain competitive:

  1. Embrace Lifelong Learning: Continuously update your skills and knowledge to keep pace with technological advancements.

  2. Develop Soft Skills: Focus on enhancing communication, collaboration, and emotional intelligence—skills that are difficult for AI to replicate.

  3. Adaptability: Be open to change and willing to pivot as industries and job roles transform.

  4. Leverage AI as a Tool: Use AI to augment your work, improve efficiency, and gain insights, rather than viewing it solely as a threat.

By focusing on these areas, job seekers can position themselves to thrive in a workforce increasingly influenced by AI and automation. The future of work is not about competing with machines but collaborating with them, leveraging our uniquely human abilities to create, explore, and think critically.

Final Thoughts

As we navigate the evolving work landscape shaped by AI and automation, we must recognize that the future is not about sidelining human potential but enhancing it. The unique skills of creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking will become increasingly vital in a technology-driven world. By embracing lifelong learning, honing our soft skills, and fostering adaptability, we can position ourselves to thrive in this new environment. Rather than viewing AI as a competitor, we should see it as a powerful tool that can amplify our capabilities, allowing us to collaborate and innovate in ways we have yet to imagine. The future of work will be defined by our ability to blend human ingenuity with technological advancements, creating possibilities that benefit both individuals and society as a whole.

In Michael Gelb’s book “How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci”, he explores how to uncover your abilities, sharpen your senses, and liberate your unique intelligence. One of those elements is “curiosita” - the insatiably curious approach to life and an unrelenting quest for continuous learning. In addition, The Book of Beautiful Questions by Warren Berger is a practical guide for anyone looking to enhance their critical thinking and creative abilities through the power of inquiry.
